Cultivating Resilience: PTI’s Agroforestry Training Empowers Women and Youth in Isinya

In the semi-arid landscapes of Isinya, Kajiado County, a profound transformation is taking root within the Maasai community. As changing climate patterns bring increasingly unpredictable weather and environmental pressures to pastoralist and agropastoralist regions, building local resilience has never been more critical.

Recently, the Poverty Transition Initiative (PTI) stepped up its grassroots efforts by conducting targeted agroforestry training right here in the Isinya area, bringing together local women and youth to learn sustainable land-management practices.

Bringing Green Livelihoods to the Maasai Community

Traditional pastoralism and local ecosystems face unique environmental challenges, making the integration of trees and climate-smart agriculture a vital step toward long-term sustainability. PTI’s training program in Isinya focused on practical, community-driven solutions designed to empower participants with actionable skills:

Tree Nursery Establishment & Management: Equipping youth and women with the technical know-how to raise drought-resilient tree seedlings that can thrive in local soil conditions.

Soil and Water Conservation: Introducing techniques to capture scarce rainwater, prevent soil erosion, and restore degraded rangelands.

Circular Economy Integration: Demonstrating how decentralized composting and organic waste management can directly support local agriculture and improve crop yields.

True community-led development happens when those most vulnerable to climate shocks—particularly women and youth—are placed at the forefront of the solution. By participating in these workshops, residents of Isinya are not only learning how to protect their immediate environment but are also unlocking new pathways for green entrepreneurship and independent livelihoods.

This initiative is part of PTI's broader mission to bridge grassroots action with sustainable municipal and regional frameworks, transforming ecological challenges into enduring economic opportunities across Kenya.
