Agroforestry and Zero-Waste Integration Program bridges the gap between community-led land restoration, regenerative agriculture, and municipal circular economies.
By connecting tree-based landscapes with zero-waste systems (EAZWA frameworks), we are transforming how communities in Western Kenya and beyond manage natural resources, eliminate waste, and build long-term climate resilience.
Why Agroforestry Matters in the Fight Against Poverty
Smallholder farmers and local communities face compounding challenges: degrading soils, erratic rainfall patterns, severe deforestation driven by fuelwood consumption, and limited access to sustainable agricultural inputs.
Agroforestry offers a powerful, nature-based solution.

By intentionally integrating trees and shrubs into crop and livestock systems, we help communities:
• Restore Soil Health: Naturally replenish soil organic carbon, fix nitrogen, and combat soil erosion.
• Diversify Livelihoods: Create multiple income streams through fruit production, timber, medicinal plants, and agroforestry-linked enterprises.
• Enhance Water Security: Improve rainwater infiltration and microclimate regulation in vulnerable dryland and transitional zones.
Bridging Soil and Circularity: The EAZWA Integration
Sustainable land management cannot exist in isolation from how we handle our waste and nutrients. Through our alignment with EAZWA (Zero-Waste Frameworks), PTI closes the loop between organic waste and soil regeneration.

1. Decentralized Composting & Organic Recovery:
We divert organic waste streams away from open dumping and landfills, processing them through community-level composting hubs. This nutrient-rich compost is channeled directly back into our agroforestry and urban tree-planting initiatives, cutting out expensive and degrading chemical fertilizers.
2. Nutrient Cycling for Tree Nurseries:
Our community-run tree nurseries utilize recycled organic matter and local resources to propagate indigenous trees, fruit trees, and riverbank agroforestry species.
3. Closing the Loop on Resource Use:
Applying zero-waste principles to agriculture ensures that every resource—from organic refuse to water and biomass—is reused, repurposed, or returned to the earth to enrich local ecosystems.
Core Pillars of Our Initiative
• Community-Led Tree Nurseries & Fruit Forests: Empowering women and youth with technical training in seed collection, propagation, and nursery management to green local landscapes and secure nutritional security.
• Riverbank Agroforestry & Buffer Restoration: Protecting local water bodies and reversing watershed degradation through strategic riparian tree planting, inspired by community-centered conservation models.
• Zero-Waste Organic Integration: Training farmers on organic soil amendments, sheet mulching, and vermicomposting to maximize farm productivity without degrading the environment.
• Capacity Building & Policy Advocacy: Collaborating with local authorities, municipal groups, and international networks to advocate for circular economy practices and sustainable land rights at all levels.

Get Involved
Transformation happens from the ground up. Whether you are a local farmer, a community group, a municipal leader, or an international partner, there are multiple ways to support our agroforestry and zero-waste mission:
• Partner with Us: Collaborate on scaling agroforestry hubs and zero-waste municipal infrastructure.
• Sponsor a Tree Nursery: Help fund tools, seeds, and training for women and youth-led environmental groups.
• Support Our Work: Donate to help us expand our boots-on-the-ground ecological restoration programs across Kenya.
